Ram . How to Replace a Window Regulator on a Jeep Grand CherokeePower windows are one of the most reliable electrical components on a car. The most common mechanism in a power window is the regulator. The regulator raises and lowers the window. The button-operated regulator on a power window is similar to the regulator on a hand-cranked window. Getting to the regulator on a Jeep Grand Cherokee and replacing the regulator require patience. Having a helper handy is definitely a good idea for this repair. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Flathead screwdriver Phillips screwdriver Putty knife Socket set Ratchet Window regulatorJeep Cherokee Window Regulator Removal Step by Step : 1 Lower the window. Turn off the engine, open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. 2 Pop the plug covers and door handle cover off the trim with a flathead screwdriver. Remove the retaining screws from the trim panel, armrest and door handle with a Phillips screwdriver. 3 Insert a putty knife between the door and the trim panel. Work around the entire outer edge of the trim panel to disengage the retaining clips. 4 Lift the trim panel up and over the door handle. Remove the trim panel. Unplug the wiring harness from the power window switch panel. Remove the door trim from the vehicle. 5 Peel the water deflector away from the door. Do not tear the water deflector. 6 Pry the weather stripping and moldings out of the door glass opening with a putty knife. Remove the two nuts retaining the window glass with a socket and ratchet. 7 Slide the glass until the holes line up with the holes in the track. Lift the glass out of the door. 8 Remove the seven window regulator-to-door and channel screws with a socket and ratchet. Loosen the lower left screw with a socket and ratchet. Do not remove the screw. 9 Remove the regulator from the door. Jeep Cherokee Window Regulator Installation Step by Step : 1 Install the regulator. Install and tighten the channel and window regulator-to-door screws with a socket and ratchet. 2 Slide the door glass into position. Tighten the two retaining nuts with a socket and ratchet. 3 Plug the power window electrical harness into the power window panel. Place the trim panel in position. Press the trim panel into place until the retaining clips engage. A popping noise is made when the clips are engaged. 4 Install the armrest, door pull and remaining retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Push the trim plugs and door handle cover into place. 5 Connect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition to the "On" position. Raise and lower the window to check for proper operation.
Ram . How to Lubricate a Window MotorIf your vehicle's window goes up and down slowly or makes a creaking or squealing sound, you must lubercate the gearing inside your window motor. To do this, remove the inner door panel. This makes the job somewhat labor-intensive, but not difficult. Complete this task within an hour and with the use of basic automotive tools. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Screwdriver Socket set Bearing packing greaseSuggest EditsItem AddWhy is it necessary?Done Step by Step : 1 Roll the window up. 2 Remove any screws that secure your plastic inner door panel to the door frame using a screwdriver or socket set. Locate the bolts that secure the arm rest to the inner door panel. Usually, the screws insert through the bottom of the arm rest. Remove the bolts using a socket and ratchet. 3 Pull the inner door panel free of the door by pulling the retaining clips that secure the panel to the door free from the door. Use your hands to do this. 4 Locate splined metal strips coming out of the mirror motor. Lubricate the metal strips using bearing packing grease. 5 Roll the window up and down several times. As you do so, the grease on the metal strips lubricates the inside of the motor. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the window goes up and down smoothly and until the squealing ceases. 6 Place the inner door panel back onto the door, and push the locking tabs into the door. Secure the panel to the door using the screwdriver or socket set. 7 Reattach the arm rest using the socket and ratchet. Nissan Murano. * • Changing a tire .• Getting into your car when you lock yourself out &»• Taking things apart (and putting them back together again) f you're not particularly mechanically inclined, you may watch those who / are with admiration and amazement — and exasperation because they have something you don't: an understanding of how things work and how things go together. When they take something apart, they can reassemble it back the way it was. When they say that they want to take a look under the hood, they can actually get the darn thing open. And when they need to change a flat, they don't spend ten minutes trying to figure out which end of the jack is up. The good news is that you don't have to be born with a wrench in your hand to know how to fix things — even things as seemingly complicated as a car. I know; I've been there. The section in the Introduction called "How I Became Intimately Involved with My Car (and Why You'll Want to Do It, Too)" tells you all about my automotive epiphany. Of course, the simplest things can sometimes be the biggest hurdles to overcome. After all, if you can't even figure out how to open the hood, how can you check the oil or the coolant level? That's why I begin this book with a chapter on the basics. I explain simple tasks that you use again and again as you work on your vehicle — like how to open the hood, jack up a car, and change a tire. I also include instructions for filling the tank with gas yourself (it's cheaper than full-service), a surefire method for taking anything apart and putting it back together again, and safety pointers that every mechanic — experienced and beginner — should heed. Before \lou Tackle Any Job It's wonderful to do things yourself. It costs you less, it gives you a sense of power to know that you did it on your own, and you know that the job's been done right. Nevertheless, to avoid getting in over my head, I always ask myself the following questions before undertaking any job: Do I really want to do this? Will it be fun — or horrendous? (I try never to do anything that doesn't feel good anymore (unless it's absolutely necessary). Do I know how to do it? If not, where do I go to learn? Does it require such expensive tools that it would cost less to have someone do it for me than to buy those tools? Can I borrow the tools I need? If I goof, can something be seriously damaged? Can I? How long will it take, and what is my time worth? How much money will I save by doing it myself? Ram . What is causing your car is overheat when the temperature gauge is normal?
